Objective
The student knows how to acquire, process and critically assess information on issues central in family work from the viewpoints of different disciplines. The student makes use of both Finnish and international research in the development of his or her competence.
The student identifies challenging and disputable situations of family work and is familiar with the associated legal and ethical reasoning.
The student is able to support the family in these challenging, complex and unpredictable situations in the different stages of the family’s life span.
The student knows how to apply the methods of work orientations requiring expertise in working with families as well as empowering working methods in challenging family work situations and purposefully deepens and broadens a way of working that involves active use of networks.
Content
Issues central for family work in different stages of the family’s lifespan:
- families of children and young people with special needs
- ageing families
- foster families
- violence in the family
- family as a client of child protection services
- multicultural families
- criminal sanctions and family work
- substance abuse in the family
- legal and ethical issues in challenging family situations
- work orientations and methods for encountering challenging family situations and providing support in them

The learning outcomes of individual courses are assessed in relation to the objectives of the course concerned. Assessment is based on knowledge, skills and competence in accordance with the National and European Qualifications Framework (NQF/EQF), level 7.
This course is graded as Pass/Fail, marked as S (Pass) or 0 (Fail). If the student does not meet the minimum criteria set for the course, the grade is 0 (Fail).
Pass (S): The student has an ability to use and apply scientific information in special cases of family work and in the development of the field.
