Objective

The students have the basic knowledge of the strength of materials and they are able to do static sizing of simple structures with the help of manuals and sizing table cases. The students can form a mechanical model from a structure under inspection and they can solve the tensions, stresses and deformations , affecting it. The students can perceive cases which require more precise and profound strength inspection.

Content

Balance of particles and rigid bodies. Grids, beam structures and link mechanisms. Stresses. Tensions and deformations caused by normal and shear forces and also by bending moment and torque. Buckling.

Qualifications

Handling powers and roots, reducing expressions, application of right and oblique triangle trigonometry, vector calculation, solving first and second degree polynomial equations and radical, exponential and logarithmic equations and pairs and sets of equations.
SI unit system, transformation of units, magnitude calculation, constant velocity motion, motion with constant acceleration, vertical trajectory, oblique trajectory, Newton’s laws, friction, mechanical work, power, efficiency, energy, momentum, impulse, basic concepts of rotary motion and the elements of statics.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Very good (4-5): The student masters the essential knowledge and skills required to get the grade Good (3) and can apply the knowledge acquired to more challenging structures.
Good (3): The student masters the essential knowledge of static dimensioning and can create mechanical models of simple structures. The student also understands those situations which require more precise and profound strength inspection.
Satisfactory (1-2): The student is familiar with the basic knowledge and terminology but in creating mechanical models for more profound structures the skills are inadequate. The student can satisfactorily solve simple basic problems.
