Objective
The students can calculate stresses affecting beam structures and they are able to estimate their strengths. They know the principal factors related to the strength of materials concerning plate and slab structures. The students can calculate the effect of impact loads. They know the basic theory of finite-element methods and they are able to apply the methods with commercial programs.
Content
Hyperstatic beam- and framed structure. Obstructed torsion. Buckling . Lateral buckling. Bending of a curved beam. Plate and slab structures. Contact stresses. Impact loads. Basics of the finite-element method.
Qualifications
The students have the basic knowledge of the strength of materials and they are able to static sizing of structures with the help of manuals and sizing table cases. The students can form a mechanic model from a structure under inspection and they can solve the stresses, tensions and deformations affecting it. The students can perceive the cases which require more precise and profound strength inspection.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Very good (4-5): The student understands the theoretical background of the structural analyses covered by the course and can apply both analytical and numerical dimensioning and strength analyses well.
Good (3): The student understands and can apply, in addition to basic beam structures, some more complicated dimensioning and strength analyses covered by the course.
Satisfactory (1-2): The student understands the strength principles of basic beam structures and can apply this knowledge but the application of more complicated subjects of the course is insufficient.
