Objective
The students know the design principles of steel structures. They are able to observe the typical phenomena of the strength of materials in steel structures. The students know how to design simple welded structures. The students are familiar with the possibilities, restrictions and also strength factors of sheet metal structures.
Content
Steel structure types and their sizing and loading. Eurocode system. Sizing of weld joints. Sizing of a welded sheet structure. General design factors of sheet metal products. Design of laser cut products. Design of honeycomb structures. The factors related to the strength of materials and vibration characteristics of sheet metal products.
Qualifications
The students have the basic knowledge of the strength of materials and they can perform the static sizing of simple structures with the help of manuals and sizing table cases. The students know how to form a mechanics model from a given structure and they can also solve the stresses, tensions and deformations affecting it. The students have the basic knowledge of material technology and they know the different groups of materials, their properties and their most common uses in technical applications. The students are able to make workshop- and assembly drawings and they master the 3D modelling and making workshop drawings from a 3D model.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Very good (4-5): The student masters the essential knowledge and skills required to get the grade Good (3) and can apply the knowledge acquired in a critical and innovative manner to problem solving situations.
Good (3): The student masters the essential knowledge and skills also in more complicated situations:
- can design and calculate steel structures and their joints according to the standard principles
- can choose materials suitable for the purposes
Satisfactory (1-2): The student is familiar with the basic knowledge but in applying the problem solving techniques the skills are inadequate. The student has mainly achieved the learning objectives of the course.
