Objective

The students are able to draw on their knowledge of the normal ageing process in nursing the aged. They have capabilities for preventing the most common threats and problems affecting the health and functional capacity of senior citizens and for contributing to the assessment of the client's state of health, function and resources, the maintenance and promotion of their functional capacity, good-quality treatment of illnesses and goal-oriented rehabilitation as well as terminal care. They are able to apply evidence-based assessment and assistance methods appropriate for senior citizens. The students are able to act in the client-oriented and understand the responsibility and role of nursing and the significance of multiprofessional and multi-expert cooperation in the care of and services for the aged.

Content

Gerontological nursing as a concept and the role of nursing in a multiprofessional team.
Older people and his/her family as a client.
Impact of the ageing process on nursing methods.
Age-specific assessment methods of physical, psychological, cognitive and social functional ability.
The most common threats and problems affecting the health and functional ability of senior citizens, early intervention and treatment of health problems, rehabilitation in multiprofessional cooperation.
Geriatrics,nursing of patients with memory disorders,terminal care, drug therapy for the elderly

Qualifications

The students master basic knowledge, key concepts and methods of social and health care sector customer relationships and setting as well as goals and methods of guidance, health promotion and preventive nursing, and they are familiar with the basic premises of evidence-based decision-making.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Excellent (5): Students
Recognize normal changes brought about by ageing and distinguish them from pathological changes. Recognize their impact on nursing the aged, and are able to describe how the ageing process affects functional ability and health.
In a versatile manner, are able to apply evidence-based methods of assessing, maintaining and promoting health and functional ability as well as assistance methods of nursing and rehabilitation. Recognize the responsibility and role of nursing, and its benefits in multiprofessional and multi-expertise teams and in social and health care services.Students bring up and reflect on ethical questions related to the treatment of the aged and suggest development ideas. Reflect upon their choices in learning assignments critically and analytically, diversely drawing on relevant and evidence-based multiprofessional knowledge

Students recognize the responsibility and role of nursing in multiprofessional and multi-expertise teams and in social and health care services. They bring up ethical questions related to the care for the aged and justify and reflect on their choices in learning assignments, drawing on relevant information outside the textbooks.
Satisfactory (2): Students recognize changes brought about by ageing and draw on this knowledge in the learning assignment. They can name some of the most common threats and problems affecting the health and functional ability of the aged, and draw on key methods of assessing, maintaining and promoting health and functional ability as well as assistance methods of nursing and rehabilitation. Students recognize the responsibility and role of nursing in multiprofessional and multi-expertise teams and in social and health care services. They bring up some ethical questions related to the care for the aged and justify and reflect upon their choices in the learning assignment, drawing on textbooks.
