Objective
The student supports and activates individuals and families to take responsibility for the maintenance and promotion of health, resources and functional ability. S/he tests, assesses and maintains vital functions and monitors the impact of treatment. S/he provides compliant pharmacotherapy, pain management and drip infusion safely, and monitors the impact of medication. S/he masters the central examination and nursing methods and is able to use the needed instruments in compliance with patient safety and ergonomics. S/he is in charge of determining the need for care and plans, implements and evaluates nursing for patients/clients in cooperation with the family. S/he applies the principles of evidence-based nursing to care and follow-up. S/he knows the central cooperation networks of operative nursing and is able to adopt an entrepreneurial approach towards work.

Nursing students:
Surgical nursing 6 cr, perioperative nursing / outpatient care 6 cr
Midwife students:
Gynaecological nursing 4.5 cr, perioperative nursing 1.5 cr, outpatient care practice 6 cr
Public health nurse students:
Surgical nursing 6 cr, community nursing 6 cr

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Pass (S):
The student has advanced knowledge of operative, outpatient health care and gynaecological nursing practice and a critical understanding of the operating principles in the field. The student has mastered the basics of caring for surgical, gynaecological, perioperative and outpatient health care patients/customers and essential guidance and assistance methods. The student is able to comply with aseptic principles in his/her work and understands the significance of patient safety in nursing practice. The student is able to apply and assess the latest national and international multidisciplinary evidence-based information acquired by him/her in various nursing practice situations. The student is able to draw on the skills acquired by him/her to instructively complete course learning assignments. The student is able to assess his/her competence and the knowledge acquired by him/her critically and instructively and to further improve them. The student is able to draw on the skills acquired and demonstrated by him/her to solve problems of operative and gynaecological nursing practice. The student masters pharmaceutical calculations faultlessly. The student is able to safely implement medical treatment, palliative care and rehydration therapy in observance of treatment instructions and monitors the effects of medical treatment. The student has mastered essential examination and treatment procedures and the safe use of the instruments and devices needed in these. The student masters the use of auxiliary equipment ergonomically and ensuring patient safety. The student assumes responsibility for determining the need for nursing and plans, implements and assesses the nursing of a patient/customer in cooperation with the patient and his/her family. The student is able to guide and instruct customers/patients in controlling their health problems. The student shows initiative in assuming responsibility for course learning assignments and shares his/her expertise during the course. The learning assignments are logical, and the student is able to make connections outstandingly and with logical justifications. The student is able to act skilfully and take cultural differences into consideration, also in multicultural teams. The student demonstrates the principles of an entrepreneurial spirit in his/her actions. The student is familiar with the cooperation networks of his/her training unit. The student complies with JAMK's written work instructions.
Fail (0) The student has not mastered the basic knowledge of operative, outpatient health care and gynaecological nursing practice. The student does not have the skills to solve problems related to nursing practice, especially in unexpected situations. He/she risks or neglects customer/patient safety (e.g. aseptic techniques, confidentiality). The student does not demonstrate an ability to assume his/her share of responsibility for professional assignments and projects. The student avoids and/or is indifferent to the patient/customer. His/her behaviour is unprofessional (language, clothing, intoxicants). The student acts irresponsibly and passively in relation to the operating principles of the training unit (e.g. observance of working times). He/she does not perceive the level of his/her competence or learning needs, and is unable to make use of feedback. The student exceeds his/her authority. He/she has a negative attitude to his/her learning.
