Objective

• The theory of welfare and the changes in Finnish welfare states
• The main features of European and Finnish social policy as well as different models of welfare states
• The main features of Finnish Social security system including social benefits and health services
• The concept of social problem and different approaches to prevent them
• The process of social exclusion and the methods of preventing the process

Content

• The theories of welfare and changes in Finnish welfare state
• The different models of welfare in European context: the Nordic countries model, middle European model
• Social security system in Finland: The basic legislation, pension insurance, social services, supplementary benefit
• The concept of social problem, the different research trends of studying social problems
• The process of social exclusion and promoting participation

Qualifications

The student knows the social and health services that produce welfare and social security.

• The student can explain and evaluate the basic theories of welfare
• The student is capable of comparing and analyzing the different models of welfare and social policy in a European context
• The student can make an analyze and evaluate the development and content of Finnish Social Security system
• The student can interpret and make conclusions when promoting social participation utilizing the theory of social problem
• The student is capable of evaluating the concept of social exclusion and can propose different approaches in prevention of it
• The student can utilize flawless the instructions of Jyväskylä University of applied science in written assignments.
