Objective
The students know the basic concepts of social pedagogy, acknowledge the connection between social exclusion and societal, communal and individual factors. The students can exploit the principles of social pedagogy in their work with children, youth and families. They understand the connections between family change and societal change and recognise the challenges of different families in coping with everyday life. The students recognise the factors that create needs for child welfare services in society and the changes which take place in children's position and rights. They understand the significance of preventive child welfare work in different settings, exploiting their own interaction skills.
Content
The contents of the course cover
1) Basics of social pedagogy: social pedagogical knowledge, research and science, trends in social pedagogy, life management and social exclusion, sociocultural animation, the strength-based orientation, operational competence in social pedagogy, working methods and applying them to everyday life.
2) Basics of family work: Family policies, conceptions of a family, family resources and preventive tools for supporting families.
3) Basics of child welfare: History of child welfare, legislation on children's position and rights, preventive child welfare work and measures of child welfare in 'open care'.
Qualifications
The students know the basic concepts and operational environments of pedagogy and early childhood education, and understand the connection between societal factors and everyday life.
