Objective
The student understands how the tourism industry has developed and what it comprises in Finland and abroad. The student knows the general tourism concepts and phenomena, understands the economic significance of tourism and
is able to examine the tourism industry from different perspectives of sustainability
The student knows the different perspectives for researching tourism.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
1 (Sufficient)
The student knows in part the concepts, phenomena and sectors related to the tourism industry. He/she recognises in part the operational structure of the tourism industry and the components of sustainable tourism. The student only uses material handed out in the classroom to carry out the assignments for the course. The student’s reporting is narrative, unstructured and illustration is poor.
2 (Satisfactory)
The student has a narrow understanding of the different concepts, phenomena and sectors of the tourism industry. He/she roughly perceives the operational structure of the tourism industry, its role in terms of the national economy and the components of sustainable tourism. He/she carries out the assignments on the basis of the source material provided. The student’s reporting is narrative, unstructured and partially illustrative.
3 (Good)
The student has a clear understanding of the concepts, phenomena and sectors of the tourism industry. He/she perceives the operational structure of the tourism industry, its role in terms of the national economy and the components of sustainable tourism. The student has carried out the assignments also using source material outside of the course, but with an emphasis on Finnish source material. The student’s reporting is structured, slightly contemplative and illustrative.
4 (Very Good)
The student has a good and clear understanding of the concepts, phenomena and sectors of the tourism industry. He/she fairly extensively perceives the operational structure of the tourism industry, its role in terms of the national economy and the components of sustainable tourism industry. The student has carried out the assignments using not only the source material for the course but other Finnish and international source material. The student’s reporting is clear, contemplative and illustrative.
5 (Excellent)
The student has an extensive understanding of the concepts, phenomena and sectors of the tourism industry. He/she perceives extensively the operational structure of the tourism industry, its role in terms of the national economy and the components of sustainable tourism industry. The student makes diverse use of topical Finnish and foreign materials relating to the tourism industry. The student’s reporting is structured, analytical and critical.
