Objective

1st study year:

The students know Western Music's main styles,tendencies, personalities and types from the Antique to the end of the 19th Century. They are able to place the musical historical phenomena within a broader cultural and social context

2nd study year:

The students know Westen Music's and Finnish Music's main 20th Century styles, tendencies, personalities and types. They are able to place the musical historical phenomena within a broader cultural and social context.

Content

1st study year:

Western Music's phenomena as part of the historic and cultural changes from the Antique to the end of the 19th Century. Musical stylistic characteristics and main types, the diverse periods' musical aesthetic viewpoints, performance practices, instruments, music institutions and the theoretical concepts of different periods.

The 2nd year studies contain two parts:

a) Music History of the 20th Century and b)Finnish art music

a)Western Music's phenomena as part of the cultural and historical changes from the end of the 19th Century to the present. Music stylistic characteristics and main tendencies.
b) The development of Finnish Music as part of Finnish Culture and of Western Music

Qualifications

The students know the basic concepts of Western Music at the music institute level. Accepted level examination (entrance examination)or corresponding optional basic studies

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Praiseworthy 4 - Excellent 5
The students know the meaning of music history periods in such a way as to realize how music has developed up to the present. They understand the diverse styles studied, their techniques and terminology and their background causes. They are familiar with several composers and their works and background and are able to impart knowledge when needed.

Good 3
The students recognize sylistic trends and the most important techniques and terminology used in the periods studied. They are familiar with the main composers,their backgrounds and historical frame associated with them. They have aural knowledge of music history's main works.

Passable 1 - Satisfactory 2
The students are able to identify the main stylistic trends of music history's different stages. They are able to name the main composers and command the special music history terminology. The students participate in contact teaching and are able to complete the assignments.

Fail 0
The course is failed when the minimal requirements are not met.
