Objective
The students know the central styles, trends, personalities, and genres of 20th century western and Finnish art music. They are able to place the historical phenomena of music to a wider cultural and social context.
Content
The course consists of two parts:
a) 20th century history of music (2 ECTS cr) and b) Finnish art music (1 ECTS cr).
a) The phenomena of western art music as part of the change in cultural history from the end of the 19th century to present day. Stylistic features and trends in music.
b) The development of Finnish art music as part of the development in Finnish culture and western art music.
Qualifications
The students have an organized picture of the central phenomena of western art music until the end of the 19th century (the course Western Art Music 1).
