Objective
The students are familiar with the musical style features and performance styles of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque both aurally and in writing. They can also implement them singing from notes.
Content
The central phenomena of each style period through singing, listening, and writing. The Middle Ages: church modes as a melodic phenomenon, Gregorian chant, other vocal art, the initial phases and development of part singing, dance music. Renaissance: Vocal polyphony, harmonization of church modes, instrumental music. Baroque: Key/tonality, Protestant choral, polyphony and typical composition forms.
Qualifications
The students know the basic concepts of the melody and harmony of western tonal music aurally, orally and in writing. Prerequisite: the theory subjects of music institute or equivalent optional basic studies.
