Objective
The students have a comprehensive basic knowledge of the areas of bioanalytics, e.g. gene technology, virology, environmental microbiology, and environmental toxicology. They are able to consider the ethical questions related to biosciences and to justify their views. They master the main laboratory work methods of bioanalytics, e.g. different DNA techniques, immunological analyses, microbiological testing and separation methods on moisture damages and infected foodstuffs.
Content
Biotechnology: genetic information and its expression, genetic regulation, recombinant DNA techniques, DNA libraries, bioinformatics, genetic fingerprint, DNA analyses (hybridization, PCR, AGE, DNA chip), the applications of biotechnology. Viral diagnostics: the general features of viruses, the accumulation of viruses, the immunology and pathogenesis of viral infections, anti-viral drugs, viral vaccinations, different diagnostic methods (e.g. virus cultivation, EM, virus antigen testing methods, determination of viral genome, the measurement of immune response). Environmental microbiology: food hygiene, clean room work, examination of a structure that has suffered moisture damage. Environmental toxicology: toxicity testing, chemical exposure in the work environment and the routes of chemicals into the body, biocides and additives, environmental poisonings.
Qualifications
Biochemistry (TAAB0750) and Microbiology (TAAM0850)
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Assessment is based on an exams, laboratory work reports and a portfolio.
