Objective

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
• Understand the importance of event planning.
• Explain the major components of planning a sustainable event including concept development, needs analysis, consumer targeting, positioning, marketing communications, sales, sponsorship, budgeting, risk management, staging, logistics, and performance measures.
• Assess an event for its planning components.
• Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an event plan.
• Identify key gaps in the planning of an event.
• Assess challenges and opportunities for professional event planning.

Content

This course teaches the design of an event plan for cultural, sporting, or tourism purposes. Students work in teams to choose a current event and learn how it is planned by understanding the major planning components for a professional event. Students will investigate consumer needs, targeting, and positioning as related to the planning and operation of events. Students will examine the integrated marketing communications, sales, sponsorship, budgeting, risk management, staging, logistics, and performance measures needed to properly plan an event.

Fail 0
Knowledge and Understanding: The student is unable to demonstrate basic theoretical and conceptual knowledge. Central concepts of Cultural, Sports, and Tourism Events Planning are not understood.
Transferable skills: None. The student is incapable of understanding the basic theory behind Cultural, Sports, and Tourism Events Planning and has no ability to present is unable to present in writing or orally on the elements of Cultural, Sports and Tourism Events Planning

Inadequate 1
Knowledge and Understanding: The student is able to demonstrate a superficial understanding of theoretical and conceptual knowledge. The comprehension of central concepts of Cultural, Sports, and Tourism Events Planning remain vague or are largely incomplete. The ability to apply the concepts of Cultural, Sports, and Tourism Events Planning to business is limited in scope and content.
Transferable skills: Negligible. The student is unable to apply the central concepts of Cultural, Sports and Tourism Events Planning to an applied business scenario; and the student has very limited abilities to communicate in English both orally and in written format on the elements of Cultural, Sports and Tourism Events Planning

The student is able to communicate in English both in oral and written format and is able to prepare and present reports with a significant amount of direction

Transferable skills: The student can explain the theory of Cultural, Sports, and Tourism Events Planning and with assistance, can apply the theory to event businesses. The student is able to communicate in English both in oral and written format and is able to prepare and present reports with a limited amount of direction

Knowledge and Understanding: The student demonstrates a thorough and consistent theoretical and conceptual knowledge of Cultural, Sports, and Tourism Events Planning. Central concepts are defined with clarity, accuracy, and logic. The student is able to demonstrate complete applications to Cultural, Sports, and Tourism Events Planning and event businesses.

The student displays a command of the subject area that befits a professional practicing in the event businesses.
Transferable skills: The student possesses advanced knowledge in Cultural, Sports, and Tourism Events Planning. and can communicate in a superior manner in English both in oral and written format, and is able to prepare reports and present reports at a level of proficiency matching a professional in Cultural, Sports, and Tourism Events Planning.
