Objective

You familiarize yourself with basics of German language and culture in the German speaking countries. You understand the cultural differences between Finland and the German speaking countries. You know how to act according to cultural norms in the most common everyday situations. You know the most common basic polite phrases. After completing this course, you understand and know basics in German and vocabulary. You can also apply the learnt knowledge in the most common everyday communication situations. The course develops and gives abilities to act and work in international and multicultural environments.

Content

Pronunciation.

Written and spoken German language skills needed in the most common everyday communication situations.

Knowledge of culture in German speaking countries (Landeskunde).

Communication and interaction situations e.g. telling about oneself and one’s family, greeting, introduction, polite phrases, simple phrases for shopping.

Grammar, e.g. personal pronouns, numeral, gender and articles used with nouns, accusative case, present tense verb conjugation, questions, word order in main clauses.

Location and time

On Wednesdays 16.00-18.30 (7.9-14.12) at main campus.

Contact lectures, learning assignments, tests or exams.
The teaching language of this implementation is English.

Exam schedules

Tests during the course. Retake in Language Centre retakes or on an agreed date.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1 You understand basic expressions from text spoken clearly and at slow speech rate. You are familiar with the norms of basic dialog and are able to manage with them, although problems with pronunciation and pauses in speech impede communicating the message. You recognize familiar topics from an easy text. You can write a simple basic level message. There are frequent mistakes in the use of vocabulary and grammar structures.

2 You understand clear and slow speech about familiar topics. You are able to apply learned content to routine spoken communication situations although there are often pauses in your speech. You understand the main content in short and simple texts. You are able to write a short text about a familiar topic. There are deficiencies in use of vocabulary and language structures (grammar)

Assessment criteria, good (3)

3 There are difficulties understanding speech spoken at normal speech rate if the spoken text is long. You master a routine speech situation. You understand texts about familiar themes. You know how to write short and simple texts. There can still be deficiences in language structures, vocabulary and pronunciation but these do not impede communication.

4 You understand speech spoken face to face at normal speech rate about simple topics, however, native speakers’ normal speech rate causes difficulties. You are able to speak rather fluently when the spoken text is short. You understand texts about familiar topics well. You create short texts applying the learnt structures and vocabulary.

5 You understand text about familiar topics when spoken at normal speech rate. You assess spoken situations correctly and are able to act in them. You understand texts about familiar topics effortlessly. You write about familiar topics clearly and almost flawlessly. You know the relevant vocabulary and language structures and apply them both in spoken and written communication diversely.
