Master's Degree Programme in Project Management
Key learning outcomes
Graduates from the degree programme in project management are able to manage project activities and utilise project management methods and tools. They are able to apply information in multidisciplinary projects in different roles, anticipating changes in the operating environment and acting in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.
The development, management and interaction competence acquired during the studies create capabilities for operating in a variety of networks and multi-professional teams. The education provides a good basis for project management certifications. Programme graduates have capabilities for continuous learning, creative problem-solving and workplace development.
Education content and professional growth and know-how
Master’s degree programme in project management, Business administration, 90 credits, content and structure is as follows:
The Shared Master Competence module consists of two study modules, Management and Research and Development. The scope of the shared Management studies is 10 credits, and the scope of Research and Development studies is 10 credits.
The Expert Core Competence study module consists of project management studies (20 credits) and a thesis (30 credits). According to the Degree Regulations, the master’s thesis is a professional development assignment aimed at developing and demonstrating the student’s capability to apply research and use selected methods to analyse and solve problems arising in the world of work, and the capability for independent and demanding specialist work.
The Complementary Competence module will broaden or deepen the student’s competencies. The student’s elective studies that are suitable to their personal learning plan will support the development of their competence according to their career plan. The student can select studies from the online offerings of other universities of applied sciences (CampusOnline), from EduFutura study offerings, the implementation of which is the responsibility of Jamk, the University of Jyväskylä and Gradia, and from Jamk’s own master’s degree programmes.
Additionally, the student may enhance their internationalisation and entrepreneurship competence by choosing studies from the courses offered in English and by participating in international intensive training programmes. The student may also promote their own business activities by completing studies that develop entrepreneurship. Jamk University of Applied Sciences also offers basic studies in educational science as elective studies.
Flexible studies
The studies are flexibly implemented as distance studies in a web-based learning environment, comprising independent and team-based online assignments, webinars, online lectures, presentations and seminars. You can freely choose elective studies from the other master’s degree programmes offered by Jamk.
Students have a choice of alternative or elective studies offered by partner universities in Finland and abroad, such as other universities of applied sciences (CampusOnline), universities and educational institutions involved in the EduFutura collaboration (University of Jyväskylä and Gradia). Higher level studies completed elsewhere may be apply for accreditation as part of your degree. The student demonstrates their completed studies with a certificate or other document. Competence acquired in employment or otherwise can be utilised as part of the bachelor’s degree. This will shorten the study time and partly reduce the amount of studies. In accordance with the principle of recognition of prior learning and experience, you can apply for accreditation based on such competence (see Degree Regulations, Section 17). You may have acquired prior learning during your studies, for example by studying in another institution of higher education, by working or by engaging in project or volunteer work.
Working life oriented learning
The learning assignments included in the courses can be completed in the student’s own or selected work community. Many work community development tasks can also be carried out as part of learning assignments and by planning, refining and/or solving projects.
It is possible to build a personal study path for the studies through studification of work and a wide utilisation of the courses offered by Jamk’s master’s degree programmes.
The thesis is a research-based working life development assignment.
Career opportunities and employment
The degree programme in project management is designed for individuals working in various fields who wish to expand their capabilities for working in planning, development and managerial duties in the field of project management. The objective of the studies is to deepen the student’s competence in the different areas of project management. The graduates will have good capabilities to work as developers of working life in demanding expert and managerial positions.
Development as an expert in project management will provide the students with opportunities to apply for new and challenging positions and to advance their career. You will deepen your leadership and interaction skills and your capabilities to work in networks in different project management roles. Having completed a master’s degree at a university of applied sciences, graduates possess the skills required for developing the operations of organisations and actively producing new competences.

Qualifications
This master’s degree opens up new career opportunities, as graduates will be eligible for public posts or positions that require a master’s degree.
Further studies
The graduate may apply to continue on to postgraduate studies in science or arts at universities (Act 558/2009, Section 37) and in the school of professional teacher education. Studies can be continued by applying for corresponding post-degree education at universities abroad, for example. A university of applied sciences also provides opportunities for continuing education in the form of specialisation studies, open studies, an online study portal (CampusOnline) and working life based continuing education.
Education planning
Working-life representatives and experts, Jamk’s specialists and master’s degree students from various fields have been involved in the planning of the degree programme. The planning of the objectives and content of the degree programme is based on the information obtained from research and working life representatives on the current and future competence needs. Advisory committees from various fields, consisting of experts and managers of different businesses, also regularly take part in the planning process. The programme is constantly developed based on the continuing feedback from students active in working life.
