Bachelor's Degree Programme in Business Information Technology
Key learning outcomes
A Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Information Technology has knowledge of and competence in the development of information systems and supporting business by means of them. He/she is capable of designing and implementing browser or mobile applications or other similar information systems using web technologies. A Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Information Technology is capable of working as part of a development team and developing their own competence to meet the requirements of the changing technological environment. He/she has good cooperation and communication skills and the ability to solve complex problems by using information technology. A Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Information Technology identifies the key business processes and has the basic entrepreneurship and innovation knowledge and skills. He/she can focus in his/her studies on full-stack technologies, data processing and analysis, digital business or entrepreneurship, innovation and product development activities.
Education content and professional growth and know-how
The first year of study in the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology strengthens the student’s general competence in business information technology and web technologies as well as working life, communications and ethical competence. The studies in the second year of study provide the student with an overview of systematic software development and expand and deepen their technical skills. The students focus their studies in accordance with the specialisation options defined by the degree programme, but they also make their own individual study choices. After two years of studies, the student will have the capabilities to fully engage in a software development project in a role consistent with their competence.
In the third year of study, the student will work in a product development project, learning the working skills needed in practical working life, in addition to strengthening their substance competence. After the product development project, the student will focus on a specific problem in the field in their thesis. The education ends with a six-month practical training period.
Flexible studies
Students have a choice of alternative or elective studies offered by partner universities in Finland and abroad, such as other universities of applied sciences (CampusOnline), universities and educational institutions involved in the EduFutura collaboration (University of Jyväskylä and Gradia). Higher level studies completed elsewhere may be accredited as part of your degree. The student must have a certificate or some other document to prove that they have completed the studies. Skills acquired elsewhere can also be described and demonstrated to enable accreditation. Further information is available in the Study Guide.
Working life oriented learning
Working life oriented learning is included in bachelor’s degree courses throughout the studies. These include practical training to promote professional skills, the thesis and various working life projects. At JAMK University of Applied Sciences, the operating model for working life oriented and student-driven learning is called JAMK Future Factory®. It combines working life operators, students, JAMK experts and working life oriented LAB environments and other learning environments. In addition to multidisciplinary and working life oriented project studies, it offers students a chance to develop their future working life skills, career paths and networks.
Studification is also among the options offered by working life oriented learning. It refers to combining work, project work, Future Factory activities, etc. with studies. Studification involves students drafting a studification plan and documenting it in the manner agreed with the teacher. Further information is available in the Study Guide.
Career opportunities and employment
The employment prospects of Bachelors of Business Administration graduated from the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology are good. In particular the students who specialised in web-based software development, but also those who specialised in traditional software development, have found employment in duties that match their area of competence already during the final stage of their studies or soon after graduation. The duties of the newly employed mainly include software development, programming, information system design and project work. The students who specialised in data and cloud-based services have found employment as business intelligence and cloud service experts, among other things. In addition, graduates from the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology also work as usability experts, testers and product managers, for example, and in digital marketing and technical customer service duties.
Qualifications
There are no specific degree-related or statutory qualification requirements in the field.
Further studies
Students may, after graduation and a working career of at least two years, apply for studies leading up to a master’s degree. Studies can also be continued by applying for a university master’s degree programme or similar programmes as well as professional teacher education. After a bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences, it is also possible to continue studies at higher education institutes abroad on master’s degree level programmes. A university of applied sciences also provides opportunities for continuing education in the form of specialisation studies, open studies, an online study portal (CampusOnline) and working life based continuing education.
A student who completes a master’s degree at a university of applied sciences may apply to continue on to postgraduate studies in science or arts at universities (Act 558/2009, Section 37).
Education planning
The curriculum of the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology is working life oriented. The ICT companies in the Jyväskylä region and alumni from the degree programme were consulted at the planning stage of the programme.
