The students' competence profile is determined by their personal learning plan.

The Degree Programme in Information and Communications Technology are able to apply the basic laws of natural sciences to solve problems in their own field. They master the skills to build information technology in an increasingly digitalised and automated society. They are capable of ethically planning, building and testing information technology solutions for the needs of working life.

The competence of a graduate from the degree programme consists of study modules in software engineering and information technology. With their module choices, students can increase their competence in programming and software development, cyber security in the ICT environment or maintenance and management of data networks and systems. The expression ‘DevSecOps competence’ commonly used in the industry is a shorthand of the above. 

The students have good capabilities for continuous professional development, diverse communications and information retrieval. They have adopted an entrepreneurial and innovative approach, and are capable of working as entrepreneurs. They are also capable of working in an international work environment.

Education content and professional growth and know-how

In the education, you will learn by doing. Students have access to Finland’s most modern and versatile laboratory environments, such as Virtual Learning Enviroment, Labranet and WIMMALAB. Your studies will also include lectures, project-type learning assignments, group work and online studies. At a later stage, you will have the opportunity to complete challenging project assignments for clients, which will deepen your professional competence and create relationships for working life.

They master the skills to build information technology in an increasingly digitalised and automated society. They are capable of ethically planning, building and testing information technology solutions for the needs of working life.

Software competence means that the student can plan requirement specifications for software. They are capable of implementing the software based on these specifications. They are familiar with the logic of programming and the most common algorithms used. They understand the production methods used in the software industry: from building to testing. They master the use of planning, version management and documentation tools.

Information technology competence means that the student understands the components of a computer and the most common operating systems running on them. They are able to design and configure communications networks that connect computers. They are able to install and maintain servers. The student is familiar with the basics of cybersecurity. The student is able to install, design and maintain the databases required by the software.

After completing the common competences in information and communications technology, the student may choose between different competence areas (2 x 30 cr): Software Development, Security and Operations. The student has possibility to replace one of the modules (30 ECTS credits) for studies in other degree programme, like Robotics or Game Production.

The practical training included as part of the studies provide you with an opportunity to get acquainted with the operations of a company in the field and the work duties in such a company.

Flexible studies

The full-time studies follow a weekly schedule and include plenty of classroom and laboratory teaching. In addition to this, the students have exercises and assignments to be completed independently (individually or in groups).

In order to participate in part-time studies, the students must be capable of operating in digital learning environments. The part-time studies flexibly combine self-learning, remote learning and classroom learning in order to reduce the dependence on the place and time. Such studies require more self-direction from the students. Part-time studies will suit students if they have previous experience in the field or if they want more flexibility due to their life situation regarding the time or place of completing their studies.

Students have a choice of alternative or elective studies offered by partner universities in Finland and abroad, such as other universities of applied sciences (CampusOnline), universities and educational institutions involved in the EduFutura collaboration (University of Jyväskylä and Gradia). Higher level studies completed elsewhere may be accredited as part of your degree. The student must have a certificate or some other document to prove that they have completed the studies. Skills acquired elsewhere can also be described and demonstrated to enable accreditation. Further information is available on the web pages for students.

Working life oriented learning

Working life oriented learning is included in bachelor’s degree courses throughout the studies. These include practical training to promote professional skills, the thesis and various working life projects. At JAMK University of Applied Sciences, the operating model for working life oriented and student-driven learning is called JAMK Future Factory®. It combines working life operators, students, JAMK experts and working life oriented LAB environments and other learning environments. In addition to multidisciplinary and working life oriented project studies, it offers students a chance to develop their future working life skills, career paths and networks.

Studification is also among the options offered by working life oriented learning. It refers to combining work, project work, Future Factory activities, etc. with studies. Studification involves students drafting a studification plan and documenting it in the manner agreed with the teacher. Further information is available on the web pages for students.

Qualifications

There are no specific degree-related or statutory qualification requirements in the field.

Further studies

Students may, after graduation and a working career of at least two years, apply for studies leading up to a master’s degree. Studies can also be continued by applying for a university master’s degree programme or similar programmes as well as professional teacher education. After a bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences, it is also possible to continue studies at higher education institutes abroad on master’s degree level programmes. A university of applied sciences also provides opportunities for continuing education in the form of specialisation studies, open studies, an online study portal (CampusOnline) and working life based continuing education.

A student who completes a master’s degree at a university of applied sciences may apply to continue on to postgraduate studies in science or arts at universities (Act 558/2009, Section 37).
