Objective

The students
- understand conceptual modeling and database designing as parts of the development of information systems
- can perceive information and related rules of the application area at a conceptual level
- can make descriptions (with a CASE tool) of the information objects of the application area and their interrelations
- can make a normalised relation-model database description based on a conceptual model

Content

The design process from concept and needs analysis to normalisation and the physical design of a database;
the use of a CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering) tool for data modelling;
designing a databank database

Qualifications

Basics of Databases or equivalent

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Excellent 5: The student shows an exemplary performance in all the subareas: the choices in exams and exercises are well justified and the metadata has been saved, innovative solution, excellent modelling competence.
Very good 4: The student shows good performance in all the subareas: the choices in exams and exercises are well justified and the meta data has been saved, innovative solution, very good modelling competence.
Good 3: The exercise database has been designed and documented rather comprehensively and nearly faultlessly, the student has a good knowledge of modelling.
Satisfactory 2: The student knows well the basics of database design and modelling.
Sufficient 1: The student knows the basics of database design, realizing and modelling.
