Objective

The students understand the basics and applications of control engineering in paper machine automation. The students are able to choose a control system ant they are also able to adjust it in paper machine applications.

Content

System dynamics, controllers and control systems, and their tuning. Modelig and tuning of control systems are done with computer simulators.

Qualifications

The students can build, program and introduce an automatically working device by using the Siemens S7300 series logic. The students understand the basics of field devices, basic measurement devices and actuators in paper machine automation applications. The students are able to connect measuring devices and actuators by means of a field device to an automation system. The students know the control and adjustment principles, quality adjustments, process measuring devices and actuators used in papermaking and in the manufacturing processes of paper fiber raw materials.
The students can solve separable first and second degree linear differential equations. The students know how to solve matrix equations. The students understand the operation principle of fuzzy logic. The students are familiar with the basic concepts of probability calculus and the most important probability distributions. The students understand the basic idea of linear optimization. The students can use their knowledge in applications.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Very good (4-5): The student has acquired the knowledge and skills covered by the course and can independently design control system solutions for the needs of the industry.
Good (3): The student masters the most important learning objectives of the course and is able to tune controls and is familiar with control systems.
Satisfactory (1-2): The student is familiar with the basics of the course and understands the operating principles of a control system.
