Objective

The students know the basic concepts of ecology, the basics of the functioning of a population, a biotic community, and an ecosystem, as well as related classifications. They are able to identify the factors affecting plant growth and the plants essential for agriculture and forestry. They are familiar with the operation of an aquatic ecosystem. They can use a microscope and analyse samples in the lab. They can apply the principles of the sustainable use of natural resources.

Qualifications

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Inexperienced performer (1-2)
• knows the basic concepts of ecology, ecosystem classification
• knows the climate and soil characteristics of Finland with regard to cultivation and forestry
• knows the main cultivated plants and indicator plants of the forest

Developing performer (3-4)
In addition to the aforementioned:
• knows the nutrient cycle of the main nutrients
• knows the forecast models of growth factor change
• knows the principle of the sustainable use of natural resources
• can use a microscope and analyse samples

Competent performer (5)
In addition to the aforementioned:
• can evaluate the impact of growth factor change on ecosystems and agricultural and forestry production
• can apply ecological models in the field of natural resources
• can apply the principle of the sustainable use of natural resources
