Sustainable Use of Natural ResourcesLaajuus (5 cr)

Objective

The students know the opportunities for a sustainable utilization of domestic resources in energy recovery. They are able to determine the amount of biofuel producible in a specific area of field, forest and swamp, and to select the production methods suitable for each target. They are familiar with the environmental impacts of energy raw material production and use, and can select solutions which influence the sustainability of production.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Inexperienced performer (1-2)
• can select work methods which are applicable to the utilization of natural resources in different targets
• knows the direct environmental impacts of the utilization of natural resources
• is familiar with the utilization potential of natural resources in Finland

Developing performer (3-4)
In addition to the aforementioned:
• can estimate the work input and costs needed for fuel production, as well as production volumes
• knows the opportunities to influence the quantity and quality of environmental impact
• can compare alternative methods of utilization

Competent performer (5)
In addition to the aforementioned:
• can assess the long-term effects of the utilization of natural resources on soil, water and air
• can determine the impacts of the production and use of biofuels at the local level
• can apply research data on the topic to problem-solving
